Type Locality and Naming
It was named by the Second Party of Regional Geological Survey, Gansu Bureau of Geology in 1965 and published by the Compiling Group of Gansu Regional Stratigraphical Scale in 1980. The type section is at the Second Mine of Gongpuoquan Cupper Mine in Subei Mongol Autonomous County, Gansu Province.

Lithology and Thickness
The formation consists of dark green amphibolitic andesitic porphyrite, andesitic-porphyritic crystal vitric tuffaceous lava, dark violet rhyolite, black rhyolite, rhyolitic-porphyritic brecciated lava intercalated with grayish white, light purple thin-bedded or lenticular limestone, bioclastic limestone and marble. It varies considerably in thickness from 1603-4020 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The contact relationship with the underlying strata remains unclear. Regionally, the next older unit is are lower Silurian formations (Heijianshan Fm at column 15; Yuanbaoshan Fm at column 16; Ulanbulag Gr at columns 17 and 18).
Upper contact
The contact relationship with the overlying strata remains unclear. Regionally, the next younger unit is the Suishishan Fm of late Silurian.
Regional extent
It is distributed in areas from Tashuijing to Yushishan of Anxi County and from Niuquanzi to Tongchangkou of Subei Mongol Autonomous County in Beishan Mt. area of Gansu Province, from Jianshan to Baibanjing and Beiyunshan in Ejin (Dalain) Banner, Inner Mongolia, and in Tashui in Xinjiang as well.

Fossils
It yields rich corals, Favosites, Halysites, Stelliporella abnormis, Palaeofavosites, Multisolenia tortuosa; brachiopod Eospirifer, and small amount of cephalopod, etc.
